Salt vs. Chlorine Pools in Florida: An Honest Comparison

This is the question we get most often on estimates in Pinellas County. The honest answer: both work well here, and the right choice depends on your budget, your equipment, and how sensitive your family is to chlorine.

Salt pools are still chlorine pools

A salt system uses a cell to convert dissolved salt into chlorine on site. You are not swimming in salt-free water, you are generating your sanitizer instead of pouring it in. Salinity sits around 3,000 ppm, roughly a tenth of ocean water, which is why the water feels softer on skin and eyes.

Where salt wins

  • Gentler on skin, swimsuits, and eyes, which families with kids notice immediately
  • Steadier sanitizer level between service visits during hot months
  • Less liquid chlorine handling and storage in your Florida garage heat

Where traditional chlorine wins

  • Lower upfront cost with no cell or control board to replace
  • Salt cells in our area typically need replacement every 3 to 6 years
  • Salt is harder on nearby pavers, screen enclosure fasteners, and some heaters
  • Faster manual response after a heavy storm or a party weekend

The Pinellas County specifics

Our tap water runs hard, so calcium hardness climbs over time in both pool types. On salt pools the higher pH tendency accelerates scale on the cell, which means cell cleaning has to stay on schedule or output drops and the pool starts to slip.

Screen-enclosed pools, which are everywhere here, hold humidity and reduce direct sun. That is generally kind to chlorine demand but harder on airflow around equipment.

What we recommend

If you are building or replacing equipment anyway and you plan to stay in the home, salt is usually worth it. If your existing chlorine setup is healthy, there is no urgency to convert. We service both weekly across Pinellas County, and our technicians test and adjust either system the same way: by the numbers, every visit.
